Whether it's for floors, walls, or ceilings, choosing the right kind of paint finish requires basic knowledge about different each type. Understanding the difference between matte and satin paint finishes can be helpful when weighing the pros and cons.

Matte and satin finishes are both great options. There are both visual and functional distinctions between the two types, and it's best to make the right choice the first time.

Matte finish

Sometimes called flat, matte finishes have a low gloss percentage, meaning they don't reflect much light. Because of that, they are excellent for hiding any surface imperfections. Matte finishes have a lot of pigment, making them quick and easy to apply to more extensive surfaces. However, they are the most challenging type of finish to clean, so a matte finish is best suited for areas with less traffic.

Satin finish

Satin finishes are a bit glossier than matte. This kind of finish is durable and easy for cleaning, making it applicable to various home areas. Besides the interior walls and ceilings, the satin finish can also be used outside due to its more resilient nature. Since cleaning it is relatively straightforward, satin is the best finish for high-traffic areas. However, it must be carefully applied because it doesn't hide imperfections very well.

Where to use a matte finish

Matte finishes are an excellent choice for bedrooms and ceilings. Any surface that's harder to reach and isn't exposed to steam or dirt will be a good match. If regular repainting is possible, matte is the best choice budget-wise.

Where to use a satin finish

Satin finishes work best in rooms that need a clean and smooth look but might require more upkeep, such as a dining room. Depending on the funds and time available, other areas with medium to heavy traffic can be done with a satin finish. To make the finish presentable, it will have to be applied with much skill and care.

Selecting the right finish

Usually, there's a finish to perfectly match every area and room according to its traffic and function. It's best to know what kind of finish will be the most functional for a room before painting.

Specific areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, or children's rooms would be best served by a semi or high-gloss finish rather than matte or satin. Choosing the right type of finish will benefit both the appearance and the future upkeep of every room.
